Building A College List

Where To Begin

“Stay open to possibilities... the right fit might surprise you.”

The prospect of going to college can be overwhelming, for both parents and students.

There are so many variables to manage, you may be unsure where to start. This is normal and part of the process. First, start with your child's passions and interests. Don't rule out any schools, or ideas in the beginning - just brainstorm.

Then, begin to look for colleges that fuel your child's dreams. You will want to create a list of schools to keep track along the way. Once you have a top list, then you can narrow the field of the actual applications. Start by compiling a list of likely schools (ones you exceed the average admission criteria), target schools (ones you meet the admission criteria), and dream schools (ones that are a bit of a reach).

There are many factors to consider when adding colleges to your list:

  • available majors

  • cost

  • location, size

  • atmosphere

  • housing options

  • demographics

  • extracurricular activities

  • campus atmosphere

Where To Begin

Once you visit a school in person or virtually, you may change your mind. It is important to remain open and calm, as you work through your choices. Be sure to listen to your gut, and don't argue the small points.

My daughter was sure she wanted a small, quiet school, but once we stepped onto the campus of the largest school in the country she immediately felt at home. Her search was over.

Be aware of visiting campuses in the rain. It is often a turn off for prospective students. A student I know was sure she wanted a small prestigious private school, but toured the school in the pouring rain, and just couldn't get the cold, damp feeling out of her mind.

Often students focus on state schools because of the cost, but many private schools and out of state schools offer large scholarships, so don't rule them out right away if you love the school. Be sure you can visualize yourself happy at any of the schools on your list, even your safe choices.

Ultimately it is the feel and fit that will determine your new college home!
