Tell Your Own Story

It is time to write your college or scholarship essay and you are looking at a blank page and staring at deep questions and have no idea where to start. It’s not easy writing about yourself, but you can do it! It is a challenge to think about ways you have overcome obstacles in your life. One thing to remember is that since you are ready to apply to college you have achieved a lot in your life. That is exactly what colleges want to know. This is your time to shine. Everyone has a story to tell. You are being asked to share insights you have gleaned from situations and how you have grown as a person. Colleges are looking to admit students who can impact the world and know their potential. You are that person and the trick is to tell your story in a way that highlights your unique personality.

You want your essay to stand out to the reader. The way to do this is to use your voice and be vulnerable. Share personal insights as to how you have overcome an obstacle or achieved a goal. A good story will pique interest and increase your chances of acceptance. Think about things that have impacted you in your life. Have you overcome an illness? Did you face bullying? Did you deal with family problems or learning difficulties? Did you try to get on a team and fail? Did you face an identity crisis and solve it? Are you driven to become a lawyer or some other important career? What matters is that you choose to write about something you feel strongly about. No matter the topic the trick is to have the reader hear your passion and become interested.

Be sure to answer the essay question that was asked. Give examples and add feelings. A common pitfall is just writing a list- so be sure to include memorable details. Stay positive and don’t beat yourself up. Most importantly show how you have grown and how the institution or scholarship will help you continue to be successful and achieve your goals. You’ve got this!
